What changes the price

  • Class size. A room of 12 to 14 reformers spreads the cost of the teacher and the space. A class of four costs more for each person.
  • Length. Many franchise classes run 40 or 50 minutes. A $35 class costs 70 to 88 cents a minute at that length. A $50 class of 60 minutes costs 83 cents a minute.
  • A live teacher or a screen. On-screen classes are the cheapest because no instructor is paid for each class.
  • Equipment. Reformer-only classes cost less than sessions that also use the chair, Cadillac and barrels.
  • Who teaches. Physiotherapists and exercise physiologists often charge for an assessment ($99 to $240 at the Brisbane physio and exercise-physiology studios checked) and can bill some sessions to a health fund.
  • Buying ahead. Packs and memberships cut the price of each class by about 20 to 40% at the franchise studios.

Health funds

Pilates for general fitness is not covered by private health insurance. Funds have been allowed to pay for Pilates again since 1 July 2025 (Department of Health), but each fund decides whether to pay, and how much. HBF has paid since 4 October 2026, through providers it recognises; Pilates Association Australia members at Level 2 and above can qualify, and claims go through the HBF app (PAA). Some other funds pay through health-management programs that need a GP or allied-health referral (PAA). Pilates run and billed by a physiotherapist can be claimed as physiotherapy under extras. Always check with your own fund first.

Frequently asked questions

How much is one Pilates class in Brisbane?

A casual group reformer class costs $30 to $45 at the Brisbane studios we checked in October 2026. The middle price is $35. On-screen classes with no live teacher can cost under $10 on a monthly plan.

How much is a private Pilates session in Brisbane?

Private sessions cost $80 to $140, and the middle price is $120. Check the length: some prices are for 30 or 45 minutes. At Shift Movement Studio a 60-minute private session is $135.

Why is reformer Pilates so expensive?

Each reformer is a large machine, and a studio needs floor space for every one, so each spot in a class carries real cost (The Guardian). Teacher-led classes also pay for an instructor. Larger classes and on-screen formats spread that cost and charge less.

Is mat Pilates cheaper than reformer?

Usually, yes. Casual mat classes at the studios checked cost $32 to $40. Mat work needs no machines, so a studio can fit more people in a room.

Can I claim Pilates on private health insurance?

Sometimes. Health funds have been allowed to pay for Pilates again since 1 July 2025 (Department of Health), but each fund decides, and Pilates for general fitness is not covered. HBF has paid since 4 October 2026 for Pilates used to manage a health condition, taught by a provider it recognises (PAA). Pilates run by a physiotherapist can be claimed as physiotherapy. Ask your fund what it pays before you book.

What is the cheapest way to start?

Most Brisbane studios sell an intro offer, often $49 to $60 for five or six classes. Packs and memberships then bring the price of each class down. At Shift Movement Studio, new clients are asked to call Jill first on 0448 888 492 to talk through the best option.
